Many years ago in New Orleans, Louisiana slipcovers were called summer dress. During the hot humid summers the good parlor furniture was covered with cotton or muslin slipcovers to keep the upholstery clean. In the winter the covers were removed. Ever since slipcovers have been very popular in the New Orleans area.
